ON THE TABLE – KONRAD HAUPTFLEISH

On The Table - Konrad Hauptfleish

Find out why Sonia Mountford is so keen on the Participatory Guarantee System(PGS) as she chats to Konrad Hauptfleish on the way to a farm in Swellendam.

Hauptfleish is the Academy and Program Manager at IFOAM and provides some insight into the basics of organic farming and the PGS organic certification. He also encourages a close relationship with your food and says that organic farming should be integrated into sustainability development goals and solutions to our climate change challenges.

Listen to the concerns about genetically modified foods and glyphosate in South Africa. South Africa is unique in that we are the only country in the world that has a staple food, maize, as a genetically modified crop.

A petition was launched today and is addressed to the Ministers of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Health & Environmental Affairs,  demanding that stronger action be taken to safeguard the health of the citizens of South Africa.

Sign the #GlyphosateMustFall Petition here.
Petition dates 2015-11-09 to 2016-02-14

November 3, 2015
I chat with the new chef Chad Manuel at Truth Coffee House about the new seasonal menu.

Truth Coffee House has been quoted as a steampunk inspired artisan coffee shop and according to The Telegraph in the UK, “there are few cafés in the world as stunning as Truth.”

Thabo Hermanus outside a coffee shop in Newlands, Cape Town where we chatted about informed food choices in South Africa.

In the first episode of On The Table, Sonia Mountford chats with Thabo Hermanus about the importance of knowing what is in your food. Do you trust the labels on the food that you buy? What do you feed your children and do you wonder how you can make it better?

Thabo is a foodie with a naturally enquiring mind, he is also fortunate enough to have a wife that makes informed food choices. This family is switched on enough to know they need to keep on asking questions and informing themselves about their food choices.
